Seeking the next great Australian TV drama scripts

The Australian Writers’ Guild is looking for screenwriters to create the next great Australian television drama.

The Guild is calling for entries to its writing for television competition Think Inside the Box.

The winners will have their original work read by the development team at leading independent production company Essential Media and Entertainment, the producers of such critically acclaimed series as Rake, Jack Irish and the upcoming The Principal.

Entries close on 31st August 2015.

The AWG hopes the competition will encourage writers to produce great new Australian screen drama to follow recent successes such as Deadline Gallipoli,The Secret River, The Broken Shore and Glitch.

Writers are invited to submit a three-page treatment outlining their original idea for an adult television drama series or mini-series, the first 13-15 pages of the script and one paragraph on the development history of the idea. An industry panel of judges will select a long list by assessing the treatments for their ability to engage the reader in the writer’s vision, the potential for the project to be produced for television and the originality and excellence of the idea. The long listed entrants will be asked to submit the pilot episode of their original show and a shortlist and the winner will be determined from this group.

As well as having their work read by the development team at Essential Media and Entertainment, the shortlisted applicants will be invited to join the AWG’s Pathways Program, an initiative that provides networking opportunities for writers and the chance to showcase their ideas to industry professionals, which also gives those industry professionals access to quality scripts.

The most recent winner, Christian White, says receiving the 2013 AWG Think Inside The Box prize changed his professional life.

“Not only did it give me the chance to develop my project with Matchbox Pictures, it has since led to steady writing work in the industry on a variety of other projects,” he says.
