Edward Albee Script Competition Winner

The Australian Writers’ Guild is pleased to announce that the winner of the Edward Albee Script Competition is playwright Tee O’Neill.

The competition was presented by the AWG in partnership with Inscription as part of our commitment to providing professional development opportunities for playwrights and other performance writers.

In October Tee will participate in a ten day master class and workshop with acclaimed playwright Edward Albee. Albee will devote the first five days of the master class to the methodology and theatricality of the 20th century masters: Ibsen, Chekhov, Brecht, Pirandello and Beckett. This will lay the foundation for each of the playwrights attending to then have their work thoroughly analysed in the second week.

Tee will workshop her play GR8 Skin. The play follows poverty stricken Mia as she enters the world of expensive wrinkle creams and luxury beyond her dreams after breaking into the home of the glamorous Hanna. With some new friends Mia discovers the skin care product Hanna is selling works extraordinarily well. On one application of GR8 Skin they all look twenty years younger. But when they find out what the active ingredient in the miracle cream is they have to work out what a good life really means.


Tee’s stage plays include The Dogs Play, Stalking Matilda, Best Possible World, Madagascar Requiem for the 20th Century, Our Man Jaman, A Few Roos Loose in the Top Paddock, Scum Homage to Rembrandt and The Queen of Ringwood.

Her writing has been awarded the RE Ross Trust Playwright's Award, the Siena College International Play Award and an International Residency at the Royal Court Theatre in London. She has been the recipient of a 2009 nomination for the Griffin Award, a 2006 commendation for the Louis Esson Prize, a 2006 nomination for the NSW Premier's Award, 2007 AWGIE award and the ANPC/New Dramatists Award in NYC, and nominated twice for the Patrick White Play Award as well as the Wal Cherry Award and Corcadorca Play of the Year in Ireland.

The AWG also congratulates the shortlisted writers for this competition Hilary Bell for The White Divers of Broome, Reginald Cribb for Damned, Justin Fleming for His Mother’s Voice and Rick Viede for The Hoax.
