AFTRS student Angela McDonald has won a year’s membership to the Australian Writers’ Guild for a screen project judges called a “very bold, edgy, high concept idea”.Angela is an Advanced Diploma Screenwriting Series TV student at AFTRS, which ran the competition, supported by the AWG.As part of the course, Angela was required to present her original series idea to a panel of industry professionals at a Pitching Event at AFTRS on Sunday 18 October 2015. On the panel were script producer Lesley Lewis, writer Tim Lee and Development Manager at Matchbox Pictures Warren Clarke. Course lecturer Holly Lyons said the judges were extremely impressed by the quality of pitches from the Advanced Diploma students.“Angela’s television series ‘Purgatory’s Lawyer’ is a very bold, edgy high concept idea,” Holly said. “[This is] unusual territory for an emerging writer to brave.” As Angela is already a student member of the AWG, she will receive an extra year on her membership.The Australian Writers’ Guild acknowledges and pays respect to the past, present and future traditional custodians and Elders of this nation and the continuation of cultural, spiritual and educational practices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
