Two writers shared the AWG-sponsored 2015 Best Screenplay Award at this year’s Sydney Film School’s 22nd Film Festival.
The award went to Josh Sambono for his script, ‘Leroy’s Dream’ and to Jovan Atanackovic, for ‘Plastic Smiles’. They each received a year’s free student membership of the AWG.
‘Leroy’s Dream’ features an Aboriginal man from the past who is transported through time to the modern day. It was described as an hilarious, poignant, clever tale, which included a stand-out scene depicting a ‘dance-off’. ‘Plastic Smiles’ was called a dark, black comedy that makes you think twice before using your smartphone.
The evening event on Wednesday 15 July at the Chauvel Cinema in Paddington was aimed at showcasing the talent of the future.
AWG member Brendan Cowell was the keynote speaker. He discussed his new feature film ‘Ruben Guthrie’ and praised actress Claudia Karvan and Guild member Jacquelin Perske, saying that working with them on ‘Love My Way’ gave him "screenwriting muscles".
