After 37 years, and over 8,900 episodes, Neighbours has wrapped production. In that time, the show has been viewed by an audience in the tens of millions, it’s been seen in over 85 countries, and made billions of dollars. It is one of Australia’s greatest ever exports.
Neighbours is also responsible for launching countless careers – in front of and behind the camera. In particular, writers. Over 300 writers have written for the show, many of them gaining their first credits.
In a golden age of television, where the dominant model of entertainment remains serial storytelling, what lessons does Neighbours offer as we move forward in the changing television landscape?
Neighbours Executive Producer Jason Herbison is one of Australia’s greatest television storytellers. Beginning his career on Paradise Beach, he went on to work on Echo Point, Pacific Drive, Breakers, Always Greener, and Home and Away, before Co-Script Producing Out of the Blue for the BBC and Channel 10, then showrunning Neighbours, which included creating and producing spinoffs, Erinsborough High and Neighbours: End Game. Most recently, he created and produced Lie With Me, a short-run thriller for UK Channel 5.
Join Sam Meikle in conversation with Jason as they celebrate the legacy of Neighbours, while looking to the future. How is television evolving, and how can Australian shows best position themselves to take advantage?
