Narrative Design Workshop - Writing for Games

The Australian Writers’ Guild, in partnership with Creative Victoria and ACMI X, is delighted to invite Victorian residents to attend a one-day workshop in Melbourne on Narrative Design – Writing for Games. 

Alexander Swords is a writer and narrative designer working across emotional games, games for change and the adaptation and evolution of stories moving to new mediums. He is an advocate for the power of interactive narrative and the need for diverse future storytellers. Alexander has created the Forest Paths Method for Narrative Design. It is an accessible and collaborative approach to writing and narrative design for interactive and non-interactive story. It is now used internationally to develop, research and educate in games and screenwriting. 

During this one-day workshop, Alexander will instruct and lead exercises relating to: 

• Understanding the player’s perspective 
• The Forest Paths Method for Narrative Design 
• Designing valuable choices

It will focus on the craft of narrative design as part of a team. Participants will leave the workshop familiar with a workflow suitable for most studios, including basic diagram techniques and a simple interactive story prototype. Please note this workshop will not cover any in-engine implementation, scripting or coding.

When: Sunday 22 May 2022 from 10am – 4pm (approx.) 

Where: ACMI X, Level 4 / 2 Kavanagh Street, Southbank VIC 3006 

Who: Open to Victorian residents who are interested in writing for games. The course is limited to 20 participants. First in, best dressed.  

Price: Free 

A lunch break will be provided. Please note this event will not be catered.
