In Conversation with Taika Waititi

In this special AWG member event, join Academy Award®-winning screenwriter, director and actor Taika Waititi in conversation with screenwriter Kodie Bedford for an in-depth look at writing for independent and studio films.

An Academy Award®-winning writer, director and Emmy-nominated actor, Taika Waititi’s latest film Jojo Rabbit (Fox Searchlight) received six Oscar® nominations and earned him an Oscar® for Best Adapted Screenplay. His previous credits include Thor: Ragnarok (Marvel), Hunt For The Wilderpeople, What We Do In The Shadows, Boy, and the Oscar®-nominated short film Two Cars, One Night. Waititi is in post-production on Next Goal Wins (Searchlight Pictures), will next direct and write Thor: Love and Thunder, and stars in Free Guy (Twentieth Century Fox). For television, Waititi directed the season one finale of The Mandalorian (Disney+), in which he also stars; and executive produces, co-writes, and has directed several episodes of the adaptation of What We Do In The Shadows (FX).

Kodie Bedford was born in Western Australia, with strong family ties to the East Kimberley. She graduated from the University of Western Australia with a Bachelor of Communications and gained her Masters in Creative Writing from the University of Technology, Sydney.

Most recently, Kodie wrote for the critically acclaimed ABC drama series Mystery Road starring Aaron Pederson and Judy Davis and an episode of the Logie Award-nominated NITV/ABC ME children’s series Grace Beside Me. Kodie is currently working on a feature film which has received funding from Screen Australia, and several television series. She made her directorial debut with a short horror film, Scout, which she wrote as part of Screen Australia’s Shock Horror program. Kodie received the Balnaves Fellowship for 2019 to develop her own play, Cursed!, which is currently being performed at Belvoir St Theatre.

Kodie started as a cadet journalist for SBS in 2008 and then moved to the ABC as a researcher for the documentary series Message Stick. After leaving the ABC in 2015, Kodie has worked as a freelance writer and co-founded Indigenous arts group Cope ST Collective. Her credits include her short film Last Drinks at Frida’s which was selected for the Sydney Film Festival, Flickerfest and ImagineNative in Toronto.
