The Australian Writers' Guild presents an exclusive ‘in conversation’ event with award-winning playwrights Kristen Doherty, Finegan Kruckemeyer and Jamie Hornsby, interviewed live at the Mercury Cinema by fellow award-winning playwright Sally Hardy.

Playwrights, here's one especially for you! Everyone else welcome, too, of course.

Join us for a thrilling panel on writing for youth theatre and theatre for young audiences, as these world-beating local writers share their insights and experiences in writing for this unique and exciting genre.

Whether you're an experienced playwright, just getting started, or wondering whether playwriting and the theatre might be for you, head along to the Mercury CX to discover the joys and challenges of writing for young audiences. Attendees will gain valuable insights into creating engaging and impactful work that captures the imaginations of young people.

Finegan Kruckemeyer

Finegan has had 100 plays performed on six continents, translated into eight languages and studied at international universities. His work has received 42 awards, including eight Australian Writers Guild Awards, the David Williamson Prize for Excellence in Australian Playwriting, and an inaugural Sydney Myer Fellowship. He has spoken at conferences in ten countries, with papers and plays published. His first novel will be published in 2024.

Kristen Doherty

Playwright.  Screenwriter.  Director.  Educator.

Kristen Doherty is a seven-time published and internationally produced playwright, who has been a writer, director, theatre maker and drama teacher for more than twenty years. Over the past two years, there have been more than two hundred productions of her plays in schools and theatre companies all over the world, as well as every state of Australia.

Jamie Hornsby

Jamie is an award-winning playwright, actor, composer and photographer. He won the David Williamson Award for Excellence in Writing for Australian Theatre and an AWGIE award for his play Claire Della and the Moon. Jamie won Best New Work at the Newcastle Fringe Awards, and the 2018 Flinders University/State Theatre Company South Australia Young Playwrights Award. He was runner up in the Australian Theatre Festival’s New Play Award, and received a commendation in the Australian Writers Guild Shane and Cathryn Brennan Award. In 2022, Jamie won the Frank Ford Memorial Young Achiever Award at the prestigious Ruby Awards.

Sally Hardy

An AWGIE-winning playwright, Sally’s work has won awards both nationally and internationally, and has featured in the DreamBIG Children’s Festival, Come Out Festival, World Festival of Children’s Theatre, and the Trinity College London International Festival of Playwriting. As well as her own company Free Range Theatrix, Sally has worked with State Theatre Company, Brink, Slingsby, Patch Theatre, Act Now Theatre, True North Youth Theatre Ensemble, and Ink Pot Arts. In 2021 Sally was the inaugural Mercury CX Hothouse Resident for Screenwriting, and she recently worked for headspace in the field of mental health and wellbeing for young people.
